Size matters

There are a few general rules you can use as a guide when designing your lampelier luminaire. But rules are meant to be broken and sometimes that can make a for a fabulous statement lamp.  Don’t be afraid to be bold. Below are a few hints and tips to consider.

If you plan to use your shade as a table or floor lamp, we recommend you get your base first. This will guide you in the correct proportions for your shade.

Height

For table lamps, the height of the shade should be between 60-80% of the height of the base. For example, if your base is 45cm, then the height of your shade should be between 27cm and 36cm.

For floor lamps, the height of the shade should be between 30-50% of the height of the base. For example, if your base is 150cm tall, the shade should be between 45cm and 75cm.

Width (diameter)

The width of your shade (bottom diameter) should be at least double the width of the widest part of your base. For example, if the widest part of your base is 20cm, the shade width should be at least 40cm. Don’t make it too wide else it can become unstable. In general, the width of the bottom of the shade should not be greater than the height of the lamp base and the width of the shade should be at least 1.3cm wider on each side than the widest part of your base.

If you have an existing shade that you want to give a new lease of life to, and keep the same size, then simply measure the diameter of the base, the diameter of the top and the height (the distance between the two) of your existing shade.
